Business Strategy and Policy Unit

Policy and reform for an enabling business environment

Overview

Established in 2016 as a supporting arm to the Minister, the BSPU develops and monitors the policies and strategies behind the Ministry’s work: investment promotion, ease of doing business, tourism development, SME development, standards, consumer protection and export promotion.

Vision

To create an enabling environment to foster private sector growth and development through the formulation, implementation and monitoring of policies in tourism, industry and commerce.

Policy development

Needs assessments and stakeholder consultations feed into policy. The unit gives strategic direction to the tourism sector, the industrial estates and the wider business community, with the Departments of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.

Doing business reforms

Implements reforms that make it easier to do business in Guyana, and monitors doing-business projects across ministries and agencies.

Research and data

Research on the core issues facing business and the opportunities open to the Ministry. Since 2020 the unit has kept a business and economic database, updated monthly and quarterly.

Public and private sector collaboration

Supports ministerial outreach and consultations with the private sector, the Department of Commerce’s annual meetings with the regional Chambers, and projects with international partners on small business and ease of doing business.
